Engineering Safety Management: Yellow Book Two Day

Audience

Engineers and managers involved routinely with rail safety and safety management.

Prerequisites

None.

Training method

A two-day course consisting of presentations supported by group exercises. Includes an optional 30 minute, multiple choice examination with a certificate awarded on passing.

Training goals

An introduction to Safety Engineering and Management within rail, supporting the current edition of the UK Rail Yellow Book Engineering Safety Management. Introduces the background to the Yellow Book and its purpose. Provides an outline of standard safety engineering practice covering the lifecycle from initial safety planning through to the preparation and submission of a Safety Case. An introduction to organisational safety is included together with an overview of Human Factors and maintenance issues as they relate to safety.

The course has a particular focus on safety management covering planning for safety, managing records, independent safety assurance and the safety approvals process.

You will learn

  • Basic Engineering Safety Management as applied within the UK Rail Sector in line with the current edition of the Yellow Book.
  • Origins and purpose of the Yellow Book.
  • Introduction to Safety Engineering Terminology and Techniques.
  • Introduction to Human Factors as applied to safety engineering.
  • Safety requirements derivation.
  • Organisational safety and maintenance issues.
  • Engineering safety planning and Safety Case development and approval.
  • Independent Safety Assurance.

Audience

Senior Managers in the rail industry. Senior non-technical staff who need a basic knowledge of rail engineering safety management and the Yellow Book.

Half-day seminar supported by slides and notes.

Training goals

Intended to inform senior management of modern safety management practice for rail with particular focus on the Yellow Book.

You will learn

Introduction to the Yellow Book, its origins and its purpose. An introduction to basic safety engineering practice, including Safety Cases and Safety Assurance.

Engineering Safety Management: Yellow Book Update and Refresher Course

Audience

Engineers and managers involved with rail safety and safety management who require an update or refresher on the Yellow Book.

Prerequisites

This one-day course revisits the key issues of Engineering Safety Management and in particular introduces the new aspects of Yellow Book 4. It is designed for anyone who holds a certificate for Yellow Book 1, 2, or 3.

A one-day course consisting of presentations supported by group exercises.
