Safety Engineering Training

Safety Management for Defence Systems

Audience

Engineers and managers who need to understand safety engineering techniques and safety management practice, particularly as applied to the UK defence sector. It is particularly useful for those working with the latest edition of Defence Standard 00-56.

Prerequisites

None.

Training method

A three-day course consisting of presentations supported by practical examples and group exercises. The course is given by experienced safety practitioners who are able to bring their extensive experience of the UK defence sector to the classroom.

Training goals

To enable safety engineering professionals and managers to understand safety management practice as currently applied to UK Ministry of Defence applications. An exposition of safety management practice as required the UK Defence Standard 00-56 forms the core of this course. Delegates will also be given an overview of relevant safety engineering techniques covering the whole systems life cycle with particular focus on risk assessment, deriving and managing safety requirements and demonstrating safety to UK defence approvals bodies.

Safety Management for Air Traffic Management

Audience

Engineers and managers who need to understand safety engineering techniques and safety management practice, particularly as applied to the Air Traffic Management (ATM) sector. It is particularly useful for those working with the UK CAA and with ESARR4.

Prerequisites

None.

Training method

A three-day course consisting of presentations supported by practical examples and group exercises. The course is given by experienced safety practitioners who are able to bring their extensive experience of the ATM sector to the classroom.

Training goals

To enable engineering professionals and managers to understand safety management practice as currently applied to ATM applications. An exposition of safety management practice as required by the UK Civil Aviation Authority forms the core of this course. Delegates will also be given an overview of relevant safety engineering techniques covering the whole systems life cycle with particular focus on risk assessment, deriving and managing safety requirements and demonstrating safety to UK ATM approvals bodies.

Safety Argument using Goal Structured Notation (GSN)

Audience

Safety engineers and managers who need to present an argument for safety.

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of safety engineering principles.

Training method

A one-day course consisting of presentations supported by practical examples and group exercises. The course is given by experienced safety practitioners who are able to bring to the classroom their extensive experience of developing and presenting safety arguments.

Training goals

To enable safety engineering professionals and managers to understand safety case philosophy and to be able to develop an argument for safety that can be presented graphically using Goal Structured Notation.

You will learn

  • Introduction to the Engineering Safety Case and Safety Case philosophy.
  • The value and purpose of a sound argument for safety.
  • What makes a good safety argument.
  • Goal Structured Notation in detail.
  • Using PC tools to develop a Goal Structured Notation diagram.

Functional Safety Assessment to IEC 61508

Audience

Engineers and managers working with the IEC 61508 standard for programmable systems who need to understand and use the functional safety assessment techniques as part of their risk assessment.

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of safety engineering principles.

Training method

A three-day course consisting of 12 modular presentations supported by practical examples and group exercises. The course is given by experienced safety practitioners who are able to bring to the classroom their extensive experience of safety engineering practice aligned with the IEC 61508 standard. The course includes a detailed workshop on the use of functional safety assessment.

To enable engineering professionals and managers to understand the key risk assessment philosophy addressed by the IEC 61508 standard.
